For many individuals, turning 65 marks a major milestone, not only in life but also in healthcare. Medicare can be confusing, with different parts, enrollment timelines, and coverage options that impact your future health and finances. That’s where Esponde Insurance Services in Chico, CA, steps in. With over 25 years of experience, we help clients understand their choices, compare plans, and secure the coverage that best fits their needs.
When it comes to healthcare in retirement, peace of mind is priceless. Our goal is to make Medicare easy to understand and easy to manage, so you can focus on enjoying your life instead of stressing over paperwork and policies.
Why Medicare Guidance Matters
Many people assume Medicare is a “one-size-fits-all” program. The reality is that there are multiple parts, optional coverage choices, and deadlines that can be overwhelming. Without the right guidance, you could end up paying penalties, missing benefits, or choosing coverage that doesn’t actually fit your lifestyle.
Imagine a Chico resident who enrolled in Medicare but didn’t realize they needed prescription coverage. Within the first year, their out-of-pocket expenses skyrocketed. A simple consultation with a trusted insurance advisor could have prevented that stress and expense.
Our brokerage works directly with you to explain what Medicare covers, what it doesn’t, and how supplemental insurance can help fill the gaps. Whether you’re newly eligible or looking to change your current plan, we’re here to simplify the process every step of the way.
The Different Parts of Medicare
Understanding Medicare begins with knowing its four main components. Each “Part” covers specific needs and plays a role in building a complete healthcare strategy.
Medicare Part A – Hospital Coverage
Part A helps cover inpatient care in hospitals, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and certain home health services. While it may be premium-free for many, knowing the details of what’s covered, and what isn’t, can save you from unexpected costs.
Medicare Part B – Medical Coverage
Part B helps cover services from doctors and other health care providers, outpatient care, home health care, durable medical equipment (like wheelchairs, walkers, hospital beds, and more), and many preventive services such as screenings, vaccines, and yearly “Wellness” visits. From your yearly check-ups to ongoing treatments, this coverage is essential for everyday health needs.
Medicare Part D – Prescription Coverage
helps cover prescription drug costs through private plans that follow Medicare rules. You can add it to Original Medicare or get it with a Medicare Advantage Plan. Comparing plans is key since coverage varies.
Our team makes sure you understand how these parts work together, which combination makes sense for you, and how to enroll without missing deadlines.
Supplemental Insurance (Medigap) Options
Freedom of choice: There are no networks. You may see any doctor, hospital, or medical center in the U.S. that accepts Medicare. You and your doctor manage your care—not an insurance company. Obtaining a second opinion is always an option.
A Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan is used with original Medicare. Any caregiver that accepts Medicare will take a Medicare Supplement insurance plan because they only need to bill Medicare. Medicare pays their part (generally 80% of Medicare-covered benefits) and sends the remainder of the bill to the supplement, which pays their part (generally 20%).
It is important to note that Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans do NOT include Prescription Drug Coverage (Part D, PDP), and for those that do not get a PDP when first eligible, there will be a penalty when they do get a PDP. (There are exceptions to this.) A Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan does not manage year to year (although the cost does generally go up, the coverage does not change) and covers only Medicare-approved services.
All Medigap policies are standardized. This means policies with the same letter offer the same basic benefits no matter where you live or which insurance company you buy the policy from. There are 10 different types of Medigap plans offered in most states, which are named by letters: A-D, F, G, and K-N. Price is the only difference between plans with the same letter that are sold by different insurance companies.
